Medicare open enrollment checklist

1. Read your Annual Notice of ChangeYour plan mails it by September 30. It lists what changes on January 1: premium, deductible, drug list and pharmacy network. Look for your medications by name.
2. Write down every medicationInclude the exact name, strength and how often you take it. Our My medicines planner keeps the list in your browser.
3. Compare plans with your exact listEnter your medications in Medicare’s Plan Finder. Compare the estimated yearly total, not just the monthly premium.
4. Check your pharmacyMake sure your pharmacy is in the plan’s network. Preferred pharmacies often cost less.
5. Look for 2027 price cutsMedicare’s negotiated prices start January 1, 2027 for 15 drugs, including Ozempic, Wegovy, Trelegy, Xtandi, Ibrance and Otezla.
6. Check rules for your drugsLook for prior authorization, step therapy or quantity limits on your medications in each plan’s drug list.
7. Apply for Extra Help if money is tightIt pays your premium and deductible for a basic plan and caps copays. You can apply any time at SSA.gov.
8. Get free help if you’re unsureA SHIP counselor can compare plans with you at no cost and isn’t selling anything.
9. Enroll by December 7Join the new plan through Plan Finder, the plan, or 1-800-MEDICARE. Joining a new drug plan automatically ends your old one.
